Day 1 - Saturday, March 2nd

5 Points of CommandMike Lombardo

A cohesive and smart incident action plan is critical and key to successfully controlling the chaos that we so often respond to. Understand the components of the incident action plan and how this plan effects all facets of the operation and all who are operating to attain success.

Remember this plan isn’t just for and about incident commanders but rather a framework for all on the fireground to operate with. The IAP in tandem with well developed, Standard Operating Procedures and Riding Assignments will provide a safer and more efficient fireground that is focused on success. Whether you are a new firefighter, or the chief of department having, implementing, and understanding the incident action plan will provide the clarity and coordination for a safe and successful operation.

Learn the benefits of a solid Incident Action Plan coupled with well-developed SOPs and RAs on different type of buildings, occupancies, and emergencies. This program provides perspective for the Firefighter, Company Officer not just Command officers. The class will be for the firefighter, company officer, as well as chief officers operating in this framework. The perspective may change somewhat of how different members operating look at this plan, but the overall focus is the same. Successful completion of our mission of saving lives and protecting property and doing it as safely as we can.

House Fires: The Core CompetenciesRichard Ray

The majority of the structure fires that firefighters respond to are in single family dwellings. Aggressive fire attack and aggressive searches are key to reducing the civilian casualties and injuries as well as reducing property damage loss. This interactive workshop will focus on the initial actions of first arriving crews and the tactics needed to address fire attack, the search, and the supporting fireground tasks at house fires. The practices and concepts taught will be based on successful as well as unsuccessful experiences on the fireground and nationally recognized fireground tasks. The student will learn tactics that will help increase their effectiveness for fire attack and search. The concepts covered include size up, incident command, where to initiate the fire attack, where to begin the search, and coordinating additional fireground tactics such as ventilation, laddering, and water supply to support the fire attack and search. Recent studies from UL FSRI will be utilized to validate fireground tasks and their sequence. In addition to the studies, fireground videos and pictures will be used to reinforce points. The student will also learn how to apply these tactics to match their departmental response and resources. These practices and concepts taught are effective, safe, inexpensive, and can be applied immediately. Through proper fireground tactics firefighters can greatly reduce civilian injuries and casualties. This class is designed to teach and share with the participant’s ways to improve fireground operations in single family dwellings for their respective department.

Day 2 - Sunday, March 3rd

Cruel IntentionsKyle Romagus

Fires are growing and extending faster in the modern age than they ever have before. We must ensure that as a nozzleman we can think and act as an independent operator. This class is a deep dive into understanding the goals of the first engine due, how to operate independently on the nozzle, and attack the fire with cruel intentions. Topics covered include:
Impacts of the modern fire environment
First due decision making
Understanding the goals of the nozzle operator
Critical thinking on the nozzle
Decision making hierarchy on the nozzle
Attacking the fire with Cruel Intentions

Every. Second. CountsBen Shultz

The unprotected civilian and the encapsulated firefighter share the same fire ground enemy time. With a shared enemy comes a shared solution speed. This lecture will examine the data-driven impact that time has on victim survival rates, as well as firefighter health. Through the introduction of scientific management and the “light and fast” approach, we will focus on effective and efficient operations, training, equipment and apparatus spec, and how they all combine to create better chances for THEM and US.
