Key Objectives:
- Develop a Resilient Culture: Cultivate a crew that thrives on challenges and executes efficiently under pressure.
- Build Momentum: Streamline roles and responsibilities to ensure positive outcomes for the citizens we serve.
-Real-World Application: Learn how JD transformed a young, inexperienced Truck Company operating on a Quint into a high-speed, proficient team.
- Eliminate Role Confusion: Master the organizational strategies necessary to maintain speed and execution in complex housing/apparatus environments.
Join JD for a high speed morning of brotherhood and learning together.
Fires in apartment buildings present unique challenges that require specific tactics to ensure rapid water application to the seat of the fire. Engine Companies must be proficient at promptly selecting, stretching, and advancing the initial attack line. Although these priorities are the same at every fire, apartment fires add potential complexities of long stretches to upper floors and lengthy advances down smoke filled hallways. In addition, Engine Company personnel may encounter numerous other variables including imminent rescues, clogged hallways and stairwells, and the use of building systems. It is essential that Engine Companies preplan and develop tactics that work in these challenging buildings. This course will discuss fire codes, fire suppression and detection systems, initial reconnaissance, planning the attack, various methods of stretching hoselines, standpipe systems and operations, and troubleshooting.
The Mayday Mindset presentation is entirely backed by decades of real-world experience and the most up-to-date firefighter survival and proactive RIT training models. This one-of-a-kind training program focuses entirely on providing today’s firefighters with the necessary tools to teach, learn, develop, and excel at any fire ground skill. Through the study of adult learning, predictable human behavior patterns, fire service data, and scientific research, this class will provide the attendees with an unprecedented blueprint for success under mayday stress.
This dynamic presentation will also familiarize your firefighters and instructors with some of the most successful adult training models available in order to optimize every firefighter’s individual ability and utilize their prior experience. This type of training will help your attendees identify and avoid several predictable fire service training failures and overcome commonly encountered learning obstacles. Rob will ensure that firefighters of any experience level, tenure, or rank leave the Mayday Mindset presentation equipped with the most relevant, data-driven solutions available to become better learners, trainers, critical thinkers, and firefighters. This presentation will be delivered in the rawest and most emotive manner possible, focusing on the premise that the path to mastery first requires unlearning.
We’ll take a deep dive into the “First 5,000” rescues recorded by the Firefighter Rescue Survey and explore how to turn that data into actionable street-level performance. This session examines the mindset, size-up, search and rescue operations, prevention and EMS considerations, common training scars, fear factors, and more. We'll highlight the metrics that shape our decision-making and reinforce our mission of saving lives.
IRONS. Many say they are the keys to the city, but this is only if you understand how to maximize the designed mechanical advantage, leverage, and force of these tools. Once you do, you can problem solve and work through many common fireground forcible entry challenges and know when and how to change things up and think or work outside the box to get the job done.
This class is all about IRONS work and it’s so much more than access- it’s addressing the main paths of egress! Upon completion of this course, Firefighters will be able to dress and set up their tools for success, perform a rapid size up to identify and defeat multiple forcible entry challenges, perform initial interior size up, account for door control, effectively use commands to enhance communication, develop good striking techniques, and perform the appropriate standardized techniques while working alone or as part of a team.
To effectively mitigate a high stress, unpredictable event, we must be able to communicate to all rescue members our intent and predict each other’s actions based on standardized training and techniques. Seconds do count. We will be able to mask up quickly, make the force, and make the grab- NOT EXCUSES!
The tactics executed by the initial Engine Company are critical to the success of any fireground. All too often this engine arrives “understaffed.” Plans and systems must be in place to ensure their deployment efforts are maximized. This course will focus on developing techniques, designing attack packages, and implementing tactics that work for limited staffed Engine Companies. Attendees will be divided into small groups to ensure each student has the opportunity for multiple sets and reps as they rotate through six skill stations: Know your flows; 1 ¾” & 2 ½” hoseloads and stretches; 1 ¾” applications, nozzle control techniques, and hoseline advances; 2 ½” applications, nozzle control techniques, and hoseline advances; advanced fire conditions/transitional attack tactics; and long stretches/apartment fire tactics.
