Chapter 2: Raise the Standard
Presented by Grove City Volunteer Fire Department

The Grove City Fire Conference is built around one simple mission: raising the standard of performance in the fire service and improving outcomes for the citizens we serve. Chapter Two brings together proven fire service leaders and instructors who have earned their experience on the fireground and are committed to passing it on. From confronting the consequences of mediocrity and eliminating excuses, to mastering engine company operations and developing aggressive, decisive command, each session is designed to challenge conventional thinking and turn knowledge into action. Featuring Lt. Brian McRee, Cody Trestrail, Capt. Jay Bonnifield, and District Chief Mo Davis, this year’s chapter delivers hard-earned lessons, science-driven tactics, and leadership principles designed to make firefighters and officers more capable, confident, and effective when it matters most. This isn’t about checking a box—it’s about raising the standard, embracing the mission, and being prepared to deliver when our citizens need us most.

Speakers

The Consequences of Mediocrity Lt. Brian McRee, Bulloch County Fire Service (GA)

Prepare for an uncompromising confrontation with the status quo. This session is a high-octane wake-up call designed to strip away complacency and entitlement. In a profession where seconds define legacies, Lt. McRee challenges you to reject "average" and realign your focus on the citizens who rely on our absolute best. It’s time to put the badge before the self.

Winning the Fireground: No Excuses Cody Trestrail, Brothers in Battle (MT)

Dive into the "Six Musts" that separate victory from catastrophe. Leveraging cutting-edge data from the Firefighter Rescue Survey (FFRS) and FSRI/UL science, Cody dismantles the excuses that hinder aggressive interior operations. This session isn’t just about tactics; it’s about establishing a firm foundation of "Why" to ensure we deliver on the public’s expectation every single time. No excuses. Just performance.

Anatomy of an Engine Company Capt. Jay Bonnifield, Everett Fire Department (WA)

Master the mechanics of a high-tempo fire attack. Jay breaks down the "Whys" and "Hows" of establishing momentum on everything from single-family dwellings to complex commercial structures. You’ll explore Tactical Decision Games (TDG) to sharpen crew safety and safety-critical reads on building construction and fire behavior. Understanding the research and data from FSRI, FFRS and others to build a "leader’s intent" that puts your entire crew on the same page, ensuring rapid confinement and extinguishment. We will cover easy to understand size up processes that quickly point toward direct tactical decisions to help locate, confine, and extinguish a fire while also delving into “go/no go” reads based on our gear, staffing, and capabilities and limitations.

Aggressive Command Leads to Successful Outcomes Asst. Chief Mo Davis, Houston Fire Department (TX)

Command presence is the heartbeat of a successful scene. In this masterclass, Chief Davis provides a detailed framework for situational awareness and rapid decision-making. Learn to read a scene with surgical precision—monitoring smoke color, roof integrity, and hoseline placement to dictate assignments that save lives. This session equips leaders at all levels to command with clarity, confidence, and an uncompromising focus on aggressive civilian rescue.
