Lecture - August 1

The Realities of Search Sean Duffy

Search is the fire service’s most critical function—saving lives. The Realities of Search is designed to challenge conventional thinking and reinforce a victim-first mindset on today’s fireground. This course focuses on proven best practices for conducting effective, efficient searches in modern fire environments where time is limited and conditions deteriorate rapidly.

Participants will explore the mindset required to make sound, high-stakes decisions under pressure, learning how to select and execute the most appropriate search tactics based on real-time conditions. Through a combination of real-world experiences, in-depth studies, and analysis of actual fireground data, this class bridges the gap between theory and practice.

Video case studies are used throughout the course to highlight critical moments, reinforce key concepts, and demonstrate both successes and failures in search operations. These visual lessons drive home the importance of prioritizing victims from the moment of arrival.

This course is built for firefighters who want to sharpen their decision-making, improve their effectiveness on the fireground, and ultimately increase their ability to locate and remove victims.

Cruel Intentions Kyle Romagus

Fires are growing and extending faster in the modern age than they ever have before. We must ensure that the nozzleman can think and act as an independent operator. This class is a deep dive into understanding the goals of the first-due engine, how to operate independently on the nozzle, and how to attack the fire with cruel intentions.

HOT - August 2

DIY Engine Brothers in Battle

First due, short crew, and the fire’s already working. This class is built for those moments—when it’s just you and a couple others pulling up with fire showing and backup’s still miles out. We’ll focus on the no-BS, street-proven skills to get the job done: masking up fast, forcing doors under pressure, stretching and pushing hose with just 1-2 firefighters, figuring out your next move when the water goes dry, searching tight spaces with or without the line, and dragging victims out when seconds count. Every scenario is grounded in chaos—because the fireground won’t wait. You’ll train to think on your feet, communicate clearly, and adapt when the plan goes sideways.

This is for the crews who show up first and make it happen—short-staffed, under pressure, and all in.

The Realities of Search Sean Duffy & Build Your Culture

Expanding past the lecture portion of this course, the hands-on portion will put the principles into action, challenging participants to perform under realistic fireground conditions with a strong emphasis on a victim-first mindset. Students will engage in scenario-based search evolutions that simulate limited visibility, rapidly changing conditions, and time-critical decision-making.

Participants will practice selecting and executing appropriate search techniques based on real-time conditions, reinforcing efficiency, communication, and teamwork. These evolutions are designed to mirror the challenges of modern fire environments, requiring students to adapt, problem-solve, and prioritize victim removal from the moment they enter the structure.

Through repetition and guided instruction, attendees will build confidence in their search skills, refine their tactics, and develop the ability to operate effectively when conditions are at their worst.
